The 2026 reopening

Closed after an accident in 2016, the Friouato chasm reopened to the public in late July 2026, after three years of safety works.

Key dates

  • 2016: a rockfall kills one person; the site is closed to the public.
  • 2023: safety and rehabilitation works begin.
  • 27 July 2026: inauguration after the works.
  • 28 July 2026: first visitors.

What changed

Loose rocks removed, a cage and nets against rockfall, concrete stairs, galvanised steel handrails, LED lighting and a walkway on pillars at the bottom of the sinkhole. The works, led by the Fès-Meknès Region, cost more than 12.6 million dirhams.

The ticket

On 28 July 2026, the public access ticket observed on site was 5 DH per person. A rise to 50 DH had been proposed but not yet approved.
